Scary Few Hours.....

Post by drmoss_ca »

I tried to do a software upgrade to the phpBB software that runs this place, and it went horribly wrong. I finally managed to restore it to the state it was in before, as Jen had insisted we pay for CodeGuard automated backups. I bet she's laughing at me now. I thought it might be gone for good.

Now I have to decide if I will be brave enough to try again. I'll let my heart recover first though!

Wow, I bet that was a shock.

I have no expertise in that kind of thing. Is there a way to back up the site in case of some type of failure? I'm sure we'd all chip in some $ if CodeGuard would be the way to go.

Thanks for your work, Chris, and keep us updated.

You need a replacement/backup person. I would do it, but I have a LOT less technical knowledge than you do, and would certainly make a BIG mess of things!! Can you put out a call to members for help?????????

We all really appreciate having this forum, so let us know if we can help financially in the future.

We do have CodeGuard, and I may have to rely on it again, as I have to try to update the forum software at some point. Keeping it current means less chance of being hacked and we don't won't to end up stuck on something ancient that stops working, like the old forum.

Don't worry, I shall be fundraising when the hosting is next due for renewal!

Tried again this morning, and had the update fail part way through. Have asked for help on the phpBB support forum, but basic questions from beginners seem to get laughed at there! I've also asked the owner of another board that I administer if he has any advice - he has just done the same update on that forum.

Well the board has now got updated files (v.3.3.11) but the databases are stuck at v.3.3.10. I'm hoping that when 3.3.12 comes along it will nuke and pave those differences. If not, we will slowly begin to crumble until we are open to hackers and then the end will be swift. Bit like CLL.

Good for Jen recommending Codeguard. Thank you, Chris, for all the shepherding you do with the site. I'd enjoy working on a project like this one in retirement IF I had the skills....I don't. This old literature and medieval studies professor barely keeps up with the IT changes.

Thanks again!!!!!
